Mission: Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3)

NASA Global Hawk No. 872 was pictured on the ramp at sunrise at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, VA, prior to takeoff on its 10th and final science flight in the Agency’s 2014 HS3 mission over the Atlantic Ocean. The remotely operated unmanned aircraft flew 236 flight hours during its 10 HS3 science flights, dropping 649 sondes to record atmospheric data within three tropical storms or hurricanes. These statistics reflect the most science hours flown and the largest number of sondes dropped from the aircraft during the three years of the HS3 missions, with 87 percent of all flight hours focused on science data collection.
