NASA’s single-seat F-16XL tail number 849 is shown accelerating in full afterburner during a flight in 1995. The aircraft, one of two prototypes modified from the basic F-16 configuration by manufacturer General Dynamics Corp. for an Air Force strike fighter competition, was flown by NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards, CA, to investigate characteristics of sonic booms and the aerodynamics of the cranked-arrow delta wing configuration from 1989 through 1997.
