NASA’s Beechcraft King Air B200 is a twin-engine turbo-prop, capable of 4.5-hour flights and is based at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va. From the outside it looks like a small plane that can carry a dozen passengers but inside it is a flying science platform with room for instruments and a member of the instrument team.
The Arctic 2011 campaign marked the King Air’s first participation in the IceBridge mission. It carried the Land, Vegetatiion and Ice Sesor (LVIS) at the high altitudes required by the instrument with flights originating out of Kangerlussuaq, Greenland in April 2011.
