NASA’s DC-8, based at NASA’s Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, California, is a modified jetliner that supports instruments used to collect data for field research. Some instruments on the DC-8 complement measurements made by satellites, providing a close up look at specific regions, while other instruments are intended only for aircraft.

The DC-8 has made Arctic and Antarctic IceBridge campaign flights in 2009-2010 and the Antarctic 2011 campaign. It will not be used during the Arctic 2012 March-May field campaign.
