NASA’s F/A-18A #853 Full-scale Advanced Systems Testbed and mission support F/A-18B #846 flew a tight formation flyover of NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center on Oct. 16, 2012 to mark the last flight in the ICP flight research project. The series of research flights on F/A-18A #853 evaluated a peak-seeking algorithm installed in the aircraft’s flight control computer that allowed the system to precisely adjust flight control surface deflections to reduce aerodynamic drag, and thus improve fuel consumption during cruise flight.
